September Was Busiest Month at The Port Of Oakland in More Than a Year

Imports Up 7.1% From a Year Ago; Total Volume Increased 2.87%

Oakland, CA – October 23, 2014 – September was the busiest month at the Port of Oakland in more than a year. The Port said today that it handled 207,412 containers at its marine terminals last month. That was the most since August 2013 when 209,138 boxes were received.

Imports moving through the Port’s marine terminals were up 7.1% in September from a year ago. September and October mark the peak shipping season when retailers finalize holiday merchandise orders.

The Port reported no chassis shortages in September. A shortage of the skeleton trailers used to haul containers on the road has been reported at some other U.S. West Coast ports.

The Port said total September cargo volume increased 2.87% from the same period in 2013. Exports dipped 7.27%. U.S. exports overall have been challenged by the strong dollar which makes American goods less attractive overseas.
