Vision 2000 Benefiting The Public Since World War II,
military use has restricted public access to the shoreline of the
Middle Harbor. As part of the Vision 2000 project, the public will
regain access to this area and a new 30-acre shoreline park.
The park will have a mixture
of new facilities -- an educational center, shoreline walkways,
fishing piers, picnic areas, a sandy beach and the preservation
of historic features. Once the terminus of the first transcontinental
railroad, the Oakland Harbor has a rich and varied tradition that
will be highlighted. Ecological and science education and all types
of outdoor recreation will be available to the public in the new
park.
