The Port seeks to develop its employees as a resource and to
promote and facilitate the fullest possible participation of its
employees in the activities of the Port. In addition to the benefits
program designed to assist employees and their dependents in meeting
the burdens that can result from illness, disability and death,
the Port also offers additional Employee Services designed to
help them deal with job-related or personal problems and enhance
their job-related skills.
All employees accrue 12 days each calendar year. Ten days of family
leave, except for senior management (H) 7 days, and five days of
personal leave can be taken from sick leave balance.
Ten days of paid vacation through the first 4 years; 15 days through
the 12th year, with one additional day at the beginning of the 10th
year; 18 days through the 19th year, with one additional day at
the beginning of the 15th year; 20 days through the 25th year, with
one additional day at the beginning of the 20th and 25th year; 25
days beginning the twenty sixth year and thereafter.
Units E, H employees, receive 75.00 hours annually in lieu of overtime.
Each permanent employee receives five days for the death of an immediate
family, six if travel is required. Immediate family includes mother,
father, husband, wife, domestic partner, son, daughter, brother,
sister, grandmother, grandfather, father-in-law and mother-in-law.
Twelve paid days annually, plus the second half of work shift for
both Christmas Eve and New Years Eve.
One day per year to use with approval when needed. If the day is
not used within a calendar year it is forfeited.
Port
of Oakland employees can become members of the Oakland Municipal
Credit Union and take advantage of a convenient means of saving
and borrowing money at highly competitive rates. Both you and your
immediate family members may join. Each person who joins makes an
initial deposit of $25. Both regular and IRA accounts are available,
as well as a variety of secured and unsecured loans. From time to
time, special terms are offered car and other personal loans. You
may arrange for automatic payroll deductions for the savings and
IRA accounts as well as for repaying loans.
The assistant to the Director of Human Resources Division is the
designated employee relations representative in the Human Resources
Division and is available to assist you in interpreting personnel
policies and procedures. This individual also assists in job-related
problems, grievances, and other matters of employee concern. A confidential
relationship is maintained with individual employees seeking assistance
or advice.
Effective 7/1/01 the Port provides medical, dental and vision coverage
for same sex domestic partners and their dependents for active employees
and annuitants. Opposite Sex at the age of 62 or older and collecting
Social Security or SSI Benefit. The Port contributes 100% of premium
cost not to exceed Kaiser family plan.
The Port recognizes employees for their years
of service in the form of awards granted on the basis of 5, 10,
20, 25, 30 and 35 years of service. Employees are grouped by tenure
and then, invited to select their awards. The awards are presented
to the employees at a brief ceremony each year.
The Port of Oakland Employees Scholarship Program is an employee-organized,
employee funded program, in partnership with the Marcus A. Foster
Education Institute (MAFEI), which will offer scholarships to children
of Port employees and to students attending Oakland public schools.
The program meets two needs: to encourage youths to continue their
education beyond high school and to contribute to the betterment
of the Oakland community. Awards are to be based upon performance
in school and participation in school and community activities.
If the Executive Director or Port Attorney determines that it is
in the best interest of the Port to offer a prospective employee
relocation expenses reimbursement, then reimbursement may be offered
as part of the terms of employment up to a maximum of 25% of a candidates
salary, not to exceed $30,000.00 including applicable income taxes.
The Port provides a professional development and tuition reimbursement
program and actively promotes job-related training courses and programs
for employee development.
