The annual California Coastal Cleanup is organized throughout the state of California every year during the third week of September. Many cities coordinate cleanups around creeks, rivers, beaches as well as city streets. For the past 14 years, the Port of Oakland has participated in this event by organizing a cleanup for the Oakland Estuary. Every year, volunteers from the community dedicate their time to pick up trash and recyclables along the estuary. Last year 70 volunteers participated in this event and were able to pick up approximately 4,000 pounds of trash.
This year, the California Coastal Cleanup will be held on Saturday, September 18, 2004 from 9:00am to 12:00pm.
Please meet at the Jack London Square Meadow, in front of the Port of Oakland Building (530 Water Street, Oakland) by 9:00am.
Please wear closed-toe shoes, layered clothing (it may be cold in the morning), and sun protection. We will provide the trash bags and latex gloves.
Of course! Volunteers of all ages are more than welcomed to participate. Everyone will be required to sign a waiver form prior to the cleanup. If the volunteer is under the age of 18 years, their parent/legal guardian must also sign the form.
Yes! As an appreciation to the volunteers and a celebration of the environment, the Port will provide lunch and raffle prizes following the cleanup.
